The National Institutes of Health (NIH) Biomarkers Working Group has defined a biological marker (biomarker) as “a characteristic that is objectively measured and evaluated as an indicator of normal biological processes, pathogenic processes, or pharmacologic responses to a therapeutic interventionâ€.
